(Español abajo) On Tuesday evening, over 100 parents, current and past students, and educators attended an extremely contentious meeting with SDW administrators about the future of the Personalized Learning Programs (PLP) in three of the district’s middle schools. Superintendent James Sebert, Deputy Superintendent Jen Gennerman and Director of Middle School Teaching and Learning Deirdre Garcia, along with the principals of Butler, Horning and Les Paul presented the reasoning for the discontinuation of the program. School board members Diane Voit, Mark Borowski, and Karrie Kozlowski were also present.

The decision to discontinue Compass, Flight, and Quest is being made with no plan, no parental input, no data, and no alternatives. We encourage any family who has a student currently involved in the program, or who might want to have their student involved in the future, to please attend the meeting tomorrow evening to share your thoughts with district administration.

Though the lack of bilingual teachers and resulting large class sizes immediately impacts Dual Language classes the most, the inability to retain and hire a sufficient number of teachers is a universal issue affecting all educators, students and families in the district. Looking forward the Alliance will seek ways to address these concerns and we encourage all district families to continue voicing their concerns and asking questions of district administration.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who has been following recent events in our district that there are numerous vacancies to fill. We in the Alliance are all parents in this district. We all want our kids to receive a high quality education. And we know that first and foremost, that means supporting our teachers and staff. We want prospective teachers to know that they can count on the support of the Alliance if they choose to come here.
