I am a father of 3 living in the Bethesda neighborhood. I have 2 girls (6 and 4) and one son (2). My oldest daughter is in the Dual Language program at Bethesda and we are planning on having the four year old follow her in the dual program next year and my son joining the dual program in a couple years. My wife is an HR Director and I am a Reporting Analyst. 

Soy padre de 3 hijos y vivo en el vecindario de Bethesda. Tengo 2 niñas (de 6 y 4 años) y un niño (de 2 años). Mi hija mayor está en el programa de doble idioma en Bethesda y estamos planeando que la de cuatro años la siga en el programa de doble idioma el próximo año y que mi hijo se una al programa de doble idioma en un par de años. Why are you running for school board?

I am running for school board because our community deserves decisions based on real data and thought out plans. I am committed to providing transparent community and data-driven decision making that represents the best interests of our entire community.

What do you believe qualifies you to be on the Waukesha school board?

I am a real stakeholder in the health of our district. I understand that a healthy school district benefits everyone in the community whether they have children in the district or not. I spent the vast majority of my summer digging into data surrounding the OOF process and have a solid understanding on the multiple layers of factors that affect the strength of our schools. My professional background as a data analyst fits perfectly into conducting real analyses on the effects the school board decisions has on the community.

Have you toured or volunteered in any of our schools recently?

Yes, I was heavily involved in the parent contingent of OOF research which involved looking at schools both inside and out. I also enjoy volunteering and helping inside my children’s schools whenever I am able.

About the District / Acerca del Distrito

What do you see as the positives of the Waukesha School District?

The specialty programs are truly huge benefits. Dual Language is not a common thing offered elsewhere and makes the district stand out. Things like the STEM programming, Health Academy, and Engineering Academy offer highly specialized experiences that  help prepare kids to be successful ahead of their peers. 

Los programas especializados son realmente grandes beneficios. El programa de Doble Idioma no es algo común que se ofrezca en otras partes y hace que el distrito se destaque. Where do you think the district could improve?

We need to support our educators and, in turn, our students. We need to make sure our educators who are in the classroom every day have an avenue in which they feel comfortable reaching out and expressing concerns. We can’t help our students if we can’t even hear our teachers.

We need to focus on how to make our district attractive again. While we are focusing on cutting buildings and teachers to “right size” there is nothing being done to promote and stabilize our schools.

What do you hope to accomplish as a board member?

I hope to instill an obligation for real analyses. Whether the decision is to close schools or invest in curriculum, we must establish processes that are able to quantify success so we are able to continuously improve student and community outcomes.

What do you think the board’s highest priority should be in the next term?

The board must emphasize both student and teacher support to guide them through the current consolidation process. I am worried by the lack of discussion surrounding the actual logistics surrounding such drastic changes in such a short time.

What are your views on SDW’s communication practices? What, if any, changes would you make?

Communication has been, in short, terrible. Parents are confused and unable to get straight answers to any questions. Communications need to be succinct, specific, and understandable. We must focus on creating a fundamental shift in our communication to ensure that families have the information they need, when they need it.

How would you work to increase the transparency of the budgeting process?

Budgeting is not a simple process and can be hard to communicate. While budgets are available to view to the public they are not easily accessible or easily digestible. We need to create documentation that re-frames the budget in a way that anyone can understand. This would also include creating KPIs and understanding progress that each dollar we budget is contributing to. Every dollar the public spends on public education should have a tangible return on investment that we are able to talk about.

How would you go about attracting families to SDW?

First and foremost, I want to highlight our programming. Dual language, STEM and 4k programs at the elementary level get families into the district early and once a family is here they’re more likely to stay. We need to make sure we are promoting these programs at every opportunity. 

Second, we need to be more transparent. Our enrollment decline is outpacing falling birthrates by a significant margin; families are fleeing the district. Transparency and open communication are necessary first steps to regain the trust of families and bring them back. They need to know that we are supporting their futures when they stay in our district but right now there is nothing happening to create that reassurance. Nothing can change until outreach begins. 

Primero y ante todo, quiero destacar nuestros programas. Los programas bilingües, de STEM y de 4k a nivel de primaria atraen a las familias al distrito desde temprana edad y, una vez que una familia está aquí, es más probable que permanezca. Why do you support public schools?

I support public schools because they are the foundation of a thriving community. Beyond my role as a dad, I support them as a homeowner and a taxpayer. Strong, high-performing public schools are the primary tool we have to attract young families to our neighborhoods. When our schools succeed, our entire local economy succeeds. We cannot have a vibrant city without a vibrant school district.

What is the most important thing our public schools should be doing? To what extent do you think they are meeting this goal?

The most important thing our schools must do is deliver an academic product so valuable that families choose Waukesha over every other option. We are in a competitive marketplace now. The data suggests we are struggling and not being competitive. With enrollment down 8% over the last two years of full data and families leaving for private or neighboring districts, the ‘market’ is telling us we have work to do. We need to improve our academic return on investment to win those families back.

What is one thing you think the community needs to better understand about public schools? Why?

The community needs to understand that fewer students does not mean lower taxes. There is a misconception that if enrollment drops, the budget should shrink and taxes should go down. In Wisconsin, the opposite is true. When we lose students, we lose state aid, but our fixed costs remain. That financial gap is filled by raising property taxes. Understanding this ‘Death Spiral’ is critical because it explains why ‘shrinking’ the district is actually the most expensive option for taxpayers. 

La comunidad necesita entender que tener menos estudiantes no significa menores impuestos. Existe la idea errónea de que si la matrícula disminuye, el presupuesto debería reducirse y los impuestos bajar. En Wisconsin, ocurre lo contrario. What do you think about the current school funding situation in Wisconsin? What, if anything, would you like to see change?

The current state funding formula punishes districts with declining enrollment. It essentially forces property taxes up whenever a district shrinks, creating an incentive structure. While I would love for the state to fix the formula to be less volatile, we can’t wait for a bailout. The only part of the equation we control is enrollment. I want to see a shift in our local strategy from ‘managing decline’ (cutting budgets) to ‘aggressive growth’ (attracting students) to maximize the revenue available under the current rules. 

La fórmula actual de financiamiento estatal perjudica a los distritos con matrícula en disminución. Esencialmente, obliga a aumentar los impuestos a la propiedad cada vez que un distrito se reduce, creando una estructura de incentivos. About Curriculum & Learning / Acerca del Currículo y el Aprendizaje

What are your views on standardized testing? Does SDW do too little, too much, or the right amount? Why?

¿Cuáles son tus opiniones sobre las pruebas estandarizadas? ¿SDW hace muy poco, demasiado o la cantidad correcta? ¿Por qué?

We test enough, but we don’t use the data enough. Tests are vital diagnostic tools, not just compliance check boxes. More testing would take time away from instruction, I want ‘smarter’ testing. We need to use this data to identify which curriculum investments are generating a return in student growth. If a program isn’t moving the needle on these scores, we shouldn’t be funding it or we should rethink how we apply the programs.

Hacemos suficientes pruebas, pero no usamos los datos lo suficiente. Las pruebas son herramientas de diagnóstico vitales, no solo casillas de verificación de cumplimiento. Más pruebas quitarían tiempo a la enseñanza; quiero pruebas más ‘inteligentes’. What are your thoughts about screen use in our schools?

Technology must be a tool but not a crutch. Through “Waukesha 1,” every student has an iPad, but an iPad is not a teacher. I support a ‘Screens Down’ approach for core instruction, especially in K-5 literacy and math, where face-to-face engagement is critical. We need to scrutinize our screen-time data. Are students using these devices for active learning or are they just using them to consume media? The device should support the curriculum, not replace it.

La tecnología debe ser una herramienta, pero no una muleta. A través de “Waukesha 1”, cada estudiante tiene un iPad, pero un iPad no es un maestro. Apoyo un enfoque de ‘Pantallas Abajo’ para la instrucción básica, especialmente en alfabetización y matemáticas de K-5, donde la interacción cara a cara es fundamental. What are your thoughts about AI usage in our schools?

Regardless of how anyone feels about AI, it is here to stay. We can’t ban the future but it does need to be regulated. I would approach AI similar to how we used calculators in school. Students need to know how to use it but first need to know how to learn and think without it. AI usage should have a system where certain subjects are off limits, some where it can be used as a companion and others where it can be a full partner in learning. For example, Fundamental math and literacy should have no place for AI assistance. Using AI for brainstorming or further understanding complex topics should be encouraged but not depended on. Advanced skills like computer sciences, engineering or other data intensive subjects could have heavy AI-integration to supplement knowledge and skill building.

Independientemente de cómo se sienta cualquiera sobre la IA, ha llegado para quedarse. No podemos prohibir el futuro, pero sí necesita ser regulado. Yo abordaría la IA de manera similar a cómo usamos las calculadoras en la escuela. Los estudiantes necesitan saber cómo usarla, pero primero deben saber cómo aprender y pensar sin ella. What are your views in the current debate over whether students, especially secondary students, should read whole books or focused excerpts?

¿Cuáles son tus opiniones sobre el debate actual acerca de si los estudiantes, especialmente los de secundaria, deberían leer libros completos o fragmentos seleccionados?

I believe students should be reading whole books. Life requires deep work, sustained attention and the ability to comprehend and synthesize complex narratives. Reading whole books teaches to look at situations with context while lengthening attention span. We shouldn’t lower standards to meet smaller attention spans but instead should raise expectations and help rebuild them. 

Creo que los estudiantes deberían leer libros completos. La vida requiere trabajo profundo, atención sostenida y la capacidad de comprender y sintetizar narrativas complejas. Leer libros completos enseña a mirar las situaciones con contexto mientras se alarga la capacidad de atención. Do you believe the district has a responsibility to provide services for students with IEPs/504s? Why or why not?

Absolutely. Not only legally but morally. I want the focus to be on early intervention instead of waiting for a student to fail to qualify for help. We need to invest in strong general education to help prevent learning gaps becoming disabilities. Special Education funding obligations must fully be met alongside a goal of giving every child needed support before requiring an IEP when possible. 

Absolutamente. No solo legalmente, sino también moralmente. Quiero que el enfoque esté en la intervención temprana en lugar de esperar a que un estudiante fracase para calificar para ayuda. What do you think is the biggest obstacle to learning that kids in SDW face at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, respectively?

Elementary – Continuity and support. With the current consolidations through OOF affecting all of our students whether it’s through larger class sizes, changing home schools, new and unfamiliar cohorts or a host of other problems, the district has not done enough to ease the process and support the students through such a drastic change. 

Middle School – The district report card shows our middle schools are meeting expectations, however there is a significant drag between Student Engagement and behavior metrics. Middle school is a hard age in kids’ lives. We need to be providing uniform disciplinary and academic structures throughout all sections to give kids the predictability and attainable goals that they need and understand. 

High School – There is a gap between our graduation rate and actual proficiency rate. For example, Waukesha North has a 90% graduation rate but proficiency in both math and reading hover near 45%. We’re equating “credits earned” with “skills learned” and we are telling parents that their children are “college ready” through graduation when the reality is many of our students are struggling.

Con las consolidaciones actuales a través de OOF que afectan a todos nuestros estudiantes, ya sea por el aumento del tamaño de las clases, el cambio de escuelas de origen, grupos nuevos y desconocidos o una serie de otros problemas, el distrito no ha hecho lo suficiente para facilitar el proceso y apoyar a los estudiantes frente a un cambio tan drástico.

Escuela secundaria – El informe del distrito muestra que nuestras escuelas secundarias cumplen con las expectativas; sin embargo, hay una diferencia significativa entre el compromiso estudiantil y los indicadores de comportamiento. What should the district be doing to ensure students, especially high school students, are developing the “capacity and skills to be community, college, and career ready”?

We can help guide students to community-readiness by having service requirements by engaging in meaningful volunteer activities within our community. We should also be integrating civics and discourse learning into our standard curriculum. Understanding how to engage in respectful debate while advocating for themselves is a skill sorely missing from the general population today and we can help shape a more civil future even through disagreements. Finally, we shouldn’t ignore “soft skills” through Social Emotional learning. Developing students in things like empathy, conflict resolution, and adaptability will lay a foundation for excelling in basic life skills and being healthy, productive members of society.  

Being college ready doesn’t mean simply getting in to college. It means having the skills to succeed. We should be working closely with WCTC, UWM, and Carroll U at all times to identify opportunities for Dual Enrollment or early college credits. We should also continue moving towards including more Project Based Learning and a diverse course offering with access to AP or IB courses.

We already have great opportunities for specialized fields via the Healthcare and Engineering academies.  We can add to this by partnering heavily with local businesses for work-based learning opportunities. This could include establishing formal partnerships that include credit-earning internships or apprenticeships as well as giving students opportunities to spend time shadowing local professionals in fields of interest before they even graduate.

How do you intend to support and promote the district’s Dual Language program?

As a parent with a child currently in the program, I see the benefits firsthand. My first priority in any program is making sure that teachers are adequately supported and have what they need, I consider a necessity in any scenario. But Dual Language is, and should continue to be, a crown jewel of SDW. The program is truly unique and one of the main draws for families to the district. This program needs to be amplified as much as possible because, for as great as it is, not many people realize it even exists.  My first priority would be promotion and advertising. Second would be community outreach. We should be partnering with local groups and businesses that expose DL students to different cultures within their own city. 

Como padre de un niño que actualmente está en el programa, veo los beneficios de primera mano. Mi primera prioridad en cualquier programa es asegurarme de que los maestros reciban el apoyo adecuado y tengan lo que necesitan, lo cual considero una necesidad en cualquier escenario. Pero el Programa de Doble Lengua es, y debería seguir siendo, una joya de la corona de SDW. El programa es verdaderamente único y es uno de los principales atractivos para que las familias elijan el distrito. What are your overall thoughts about the OOF process?

First, I am not anti-consolidation nor do I believe that a school should never close. Additionally, I also believe that the national birth rate decline is a worthwhile reason to look at consolidation of facilities and adjusting long terms plan. That said, the way the process played out was hectic, poorly thought out, and as transparent as concrete. At the end of the day, it was abundantly clear that the current school board knew what they wanted to do and they were going to do it no matter what. They should have saved everyone the time and energy and said this from the beginning. Instead, they wasted months of everyone’s time to feign transparency. 

Primero, no estoy en contra de la consolidación ni creo que una escuela nunca deba cerrar. Además, también creo que la disminución de la tasa de natalidad a nivel nacional es una razón válida para considerar la consolidación de instalaciones y ajustar planes a largo plazo. Dicho esto, la forma en que se desarrolló el proceso fue caótica, mal pensada y tan transparente como el cemento. Al final del día, estaba más que claro que la junta escolar actual sabía lo que quería hacer y lo harían sin importar qué. Deberían haber ahorrado a todos tiempo y energía y decirlo desde el principio. En cambio, hicieron perder meses a todos pretendiendo ser transparentes.

What, if anything, would you have liked to have seen be done differently?

The current board was elected to be in their position, to that end I can not fault them for their ultimate decision they came to. However I have two main, glaring issues that are unacceptable. First, revealing a plan no one had seen literal minutes before the final vote then implementing that plan is a slap in the face to everyone who spent a single second being involved in the process at any level. That includes everyone with students in the district as well as the taxpayers the board represents. Second, implementation without planning has exposed this board configuration and administration as being negligent, dismissive, and reactive rather than proactive . We’ve seen through the atrocious communication attempts, the lack of transportation answers or information, the confusing redistricting maps, and now that lack of information regarding summer school that no aspect of the district is safe from the incompetence that has been displayed over and over. 

La junta actual fue elegida para estar en su posición, y en ese sentido no puedo culparlos por la decisión final a la que llegaron. Sin embargo, tengo dos problemas principales y evidentes que son inaceptables. Primero, revelar un plan que nadie había visto literal minutos antes de la votación final y luego implementar ese plan es una bofetada para todos los que dedicaron un solo segundo a participar en el proceso en cualquier nivel. Eso incluye a todos los que tienen estudiantes en el distrito, así como a los contribuyentes que la junta representa. Segundo, la implementación sin planificación ha expuesto a esta configuración de la junta y a la administración como negligentes, despectivos y reactivos en lugar de proactivos. Hemos visto, a través de los atroces intentos de comunicación, la falta de respuestas o información sobre transporte, los confusos mapas de redistribución y ahora esa falta de información respecto a la escuela de verano, que ningún aspecto del distrito está a salvo de la incompetencia que se ha mostrado una y otra vez.

What is your overall vision for the future of SDW?

¿Cuál es tu visión general para el futuro de SDW?

I believe in what we have and believe that the foundation still exists to make SDW a true destination district. We need a board and administration that share that vision to work together towards it. We get there by setting quantifiable metrics and goals for ourselves and being honest and transparent with the public about our progress. Until we have leaders in place who are willing to hold themselves accountable we are doing little more than hoping our decisions are the right ones. 

Creo en lo que tenemos y en que aún existe la base para hacer de SDW un verdadero distrito de destino. Necesitamos una junta y una administración que compartan esa visión para trabajar juntos hacia ella. Llegamos allí estableciendo métricas y objetivos cuantificables para nosotros mismos y siendo honestos y transparentes con el público sobre nuestro progreso. Hasta que tengamos líderes en el lugar que estén dispuestos a responsabilizarse, estamos haciendo poco más que esperar que nuestras decisiones sean las correctas.

If elected, how do you plan to navigate the implementation of the plan the board approved in November?

Si es elegido, ¿cómo planea manejar la implementación del plan que la junta aprobó en noviembre?

It would be a short turnaround time which makes accountability and transparency all the more important. As a board, they should be asking administration for their detailed implementation road map, not just for general updates and patting themselves on the back. I would push immediately for detailed implementation plans, specifics on how progress is being tracked, and details on how administration is providing needed support to students, teachers, and families throughout the entire process. 

Sería un tiempo de respuesta corto, lo que hace que la responsabilidad y la transparencia sean aún más importantes. Como junta, deberían estar pidiendo a la administración su plan de implementación detallado, no solo actualizaciones generales y felicitaciones a sí mismos. Is there anything else you would like to share about why voters should elect you to the school board this April?

I’m not a politician; I’m a parent who believes in the foundation of this school district. I want all of my kids to go to SDW but the current path is unsustainable. We need to stop the enrollment exodus (almost 4x the rate of the rest of the county) and start acting like we want to be a destination district.  

I’m not interested in making political statements or taking moral stands. What I am interested in is using district-centered, data-driven decisions that come with quantifiable results so we can understand how to best use our resources to create the best district we can possibly become. 

No soy político; soy un padre que cree en los cimientos de este distrito escolar. Quiero que todos mis hijos asistan a SDW, pero la trayectoria actual no es sostenible. Necesitamos detener la fuga de inscripciones (casi cuatro veces la tasa del resto del condado) y empezar a actuar como si quisiéramos ser un distrito de destino.

No me interesa hacer declaraciones políticas ni tomar posturas morales. Lo que me interesa es tomar decisiones centradas en el distrito y basadas en datos, que tengan resultados cuantificables, para que podamos entender cómo usar mejor nuestros recursos y crear el mejor distrito que sea posible.
