The Spring Election has come and gone, and in between heading to our basements for all the storms, we’re taking a look at how the results will impact both students and families in Waukesha, as well as the community as a whole.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

\n \n Waukesha School Board <\/span>\n\n \n \n <\/span>\n <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
\n
\n

First, let\u2019s take a look at the Waukesha School Board election. Each year three of the nine school board seats are up for grabs. Out of the six candidates vying for those spots, incumbents Diane Voit and Bette Koenig, and one newcomer, SDW parent Mitch Gallagher, received the highest number of votes.<\/p>\n

The final count was close, with other challengers Melissa Toledo and Chase Allen coming within just a few hundred votes of winning. Maria Carrillo, whose on-again, off-again, back-on-again candidacy likely confused voters, trailed the other five candidates by a substantial amount.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

\n \n What does this mean for Waukesha students and families? <\/span>\n\n \n \n <\/span>\n <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\n

When it comes to the composition of the board, the election changes the makeup of the 9 members from an 8-1 WisRed majority to 7-2. In the short term, it likely won\u2019t change the direction of policy decisions. However, our sense is that this election changes the feel in the room, and the energy in the community. Over the last few election cycles the Republican-backed candidates have won 14 of the last 15 seats. With Tuesday\u2019s election, however, the Republican Party of Waukesha County has discovered they\u2019re not invincible when it comes to school boards, both in the city of Waukesha and throughout the county, and parents and taxpayers who value local control and high quality public education over the national culture war agenda now have a louder voice.<\/p>\n

Perhaps even more importantly, this election was a strong signal that grassroots candidates, representing our local interests, can win, despite tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of dark money from national groups trying to buy seats for candidates who support their agendas. We hope that this inspires more community members to consider running for school board next April, when the seats currently held by Kelly Piacsek, Anthony Zenobia, and Eric Brooks will be up.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n \n Changing Trends in Voting <\/span>\n\n \n \n <\/span>\n <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\n

The Alliance also dug into this year’s results across the county to see exactly how well school board candidates backed by the WisRed Initiative (an arm of the Republican Party of Waukesha County) performed compared to historical trends. Per their website, WisRed claims \u201can 86% win rate, with 642 of 722 candidates elected over five consecutive cycles.\u201d With Waukesha County\u2019s history as a hotbed for conservatism in the state, those numbers are impressive, but not surprising. This year’s Spring Election tells a different story.<\/p>\n

The Alliance combed through the result of every school board election result in Waukesha County. Overall, there were a total of 40 seats that were filled on Election Day, and 26 of them went to WisRed candidates, which is a 65% win rate for WisRed. However, only 24 of those seats were contested. WisRed won only 9 out of those 24 contested seats, which is an incredibly low 37.5% win rate.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n \n The Short and Long Term Effects of This Election <\/span>\n\n \n \n <\/span>\n <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\n

While it\u2019s impossible to predict the future of policy and politics in Waukesha, we feel like this year’s election allows some important takeaways:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Future School Board Races Will Likely Feature Moderate Candidates:<\/strong>
    Political extremism and culture wars seem to be falling by the wayside. The death of public schools is unwanted by a majority of this community. Waukesha voters made it clear they want educators and district parents to guide public education for students, and that we should be striving for strong public schools. Homeschool parents or employees of competing schools, even with tens of thousands of dollars poured into their campaigns, aren\u2019t electable.<\/li>\n
  2. The Need for Common Ground:<\/strong>
    2027\u2019s Waukesha School Board Election will feature three seats up for grabs: those currently occupied by Board President Kelly Piacsek, Vice President Anthony Zenobia, and member Eric Brooks. All three have shown a penchant for bypassing the \u2018non-partisan\u2019 expectations of being a board member, particularly Mr. Brooks. With his recent foray into being a custodian of a Political Action Committee that attacked his colleague on the board, Diane Voit, Eric Brooks\u2019s prospects of being reelected seem to drop by the day. Certainly each of them has enough political acumen to realize finding common ground with members of the community they don\u2019t see eye to eye with will need to become a priority in the next year.<\/li>\n
  3. A Political Shift in Waukesha County:<\/strong>
    Taking into account the two school board losses in Waukesha, school board race losses across the county, Scott Allen\u2019s failure in the Waukesha mayor\u2019s race, and Judge Chris Taylor\u2019s landslide victory over Maria Lazar, the Republican Party of Waukesha County has likely come to the realization that their iron grip on Waukesha politics is over.<\/li>\n<\/ol> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

    Like most parents, our eyes are on the closing of multiple schools in the district in the coming months. We invite you to keep a close watch on updates from the School District of Waukesha.<\/p>\n

Each year three of the nine school board seats are up for grabs. Out of the six candidates vying for those spots, incumbents Diane Voit and Bette Koenig, and one newcomer, SDW parent Mitch Gallagher, received the highest number of votes.<\/p> <p>The final count was close, with other challengers Melissa Toledo and Chase Allen coming within just a few hundred votes of winning. Maria Carrillo, whose on-again, off-again, back-on-again candidacy likely confused voters, trailed the other five candidates by a substantial amount.<\/p>\n<h3>What does this mean for Waukesha students and families?<br\/><\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to the composition of the board, the election changes the makeup of the 9 members from an 8-1 WisRed majority to 7-2. In the short term, it likely won\u2019t change the direction of policy decisions. However, our sense is that this election changes the feel in the room, and the energy in the community. Over the last few election cycles the Republican-backed candidates have won 14 of the last 15 seats. With Tuesday\u2019s election, however, the Republican Party of Waukesha County has discovered they\u2019re not invincible when it comes to school boards, both in the city of Waukesha and throughout the county, and parents and taxpayers who value local control and high quality public education over the national culture war agenda now have a louder voice.<\/p> <p>Perhaps even more importantly, this election was a strong signal that grassroots candidates, representing our local interests, can win, despite tens of thousands of dollars' worth of dark money from national groups trying to buy seats for candidates who support their agendas. We hope that this inspires more community members to consider running for school board next April, when the seats currently held by Kelly Piacsek, Anthony Zenobia, and Eric Brooks will be up.<\/p>\n<h3>Changing Trends in Voting<br\/><\/h3>\n<p>The Alliance also dug into this year's results across the county to see exactly how well school board candidates backed by the WisRed Initiative (an arm of the Republican Party of Waukesha County) performed compared to historical trends. Per their website, WisRed claims \u201can 86% win rate, with 642 of 722 candidates elected over five consecutive cycles.\u201d With Waukesha County\u2019s history as a hotbed for conservatism in the state, those numbers are impressive, but not surprising. This year's Spring Election tells a different story.<\/p> <p>The Alliance combed through the result of every school board election result in Waukesha County. Overall, there were a total of 40 seats that were filled on Election Day, and 26 of them went to WisRed candidates, which is a 65% win rate for WisRed. However, only 24 of those seats were contested. WisRed won only 9 out of those 24 contested seats, which is an incredibly low 37.5% win rate.<\/p>\n<h3>The Short and Long Term Effects of This Election<br\/><\/h3>\n<p>While it\u2019s impossible to predict the future of policy and politics in Waukesha, we feel like this year's election allows some important takeaways:<\/p> <ol> <li><strong>Future School Board Races Will Likely Feature Moderate Candidates:<\/strong> <br \/>Political extremism and culture wars seem to be falling by the wayside. The death of public schools is unwanted by a majority of this community. Waukesha voters made it clear they want educators and district parents to guide public education for students, and that we should be striving for strong public schools. Homeschool parents or employees of competing schools, even with tens of thousands of dollars poured into their campaigns, aren\u2019t electable.<\/li> <li><strong>The Need for Common Ground:<\/strong> <br \/>2027\u2019s Waukesha School Board Election will feature three seats up for grabs: those currently occupied by Board President Kelly Piacsek, Vice President Anthony Zenobia, and member Eric Brooks. All three have shown a penchant for bypassing the \u2018non-partisan\u2019 expectations of being a board member, particularly Mr. Brooks. With his recent foray into being a custodian of a Political Action Committee that attacked his colleague on the board, Diane Voit, Eric Brooks\u2019s prospects of being reelected seem to drop by the day. Certainly each of them has enough political acumen to realize finding common ground with members of the community they don\u2019t see eye to eye with will need to become a priority in the next year.<\/li> <li><strong>A Political Shift in Waukesha County:<\/strong> <br \/>Taking into account the two school board losses in Waukesha, school board race losses across the county, Scott Allen\u2019s failure in the Waukesha mayor\u2019s race, and Judge Chris Taylor\u2019s landslide victory over Maria Lazar, the Republican Party of Waukesha County has likely come to the realization that their iron grip on Waukesha politics is over.<\/li> <\/ol>\n<h3>What's on our Radar Post-Election?<br\/><\/h3>\n<p>Like most parents, our eyes are on the closing of multiple schools in the district in the coming months.
