Making it work came down to parents advocating for additional support in the form of therapists, Special Education teachers, aides, floaters, and more. That additional support didn’t get fully implemented until April of 2023. Sustained parent and community advocacy was crucial.

We call upon our community to engage in the same kind of sustained advocacy now, to ensure that all of the pieces necessary for success are in place ahead of time, so that our students’ educations are not disrupted.

There are a number of issues which need to be addressed, and logistics which need to be fully mapped out before any plan can be implemented:

Questions & Concerns For All 3 Options:

In all 3 OOF proposals, schools are going to be closed, boundary lines are going to be redrawn, and students are going to face major transitions. Many schools will be significantly more crowded than they currently are, meaning that:

Class sizes will increase, meaning teachers will have less time to give attention to each student UNLESS we advocate for more aides, floaters, and additional teachers.

Rooms currently used for special education could be converted into classrooms to accommodate increased student enrollment, meaning there is potential to lose the spaces and resources we currently have for special education students. This will also impact non-special education students when there is no sensory or quiet space for special education students to retreat to when they are in need of it.

If schools don’t have enough staff to accommodate the increased population and needs of the students, it will impact ALL STUDENTS in their learning, the behavior, and mental development.

What plans are being made to ensure adequate staffing?

What will the impact of larger classes be on special education students?

How will the district ensure that special education students continue to be educated in the least restrictive environment when there are fewer flex spaces available?

How is the district planning to support students’ mental and emotional health through these transitions?

What space will be made and what practices will be put in place to help students from schools that are closing grieve the loss of their previous school and adapt to their new one?

In all 3 proposals, a K-8 STEM moves in to the Les Paul building, which creates a number of logistical hurdles:

Car traffic will increase, due to STEM being a charter school which does not provide busing, as well as the addition of younger grades who cannot walk/bike to school on their own.

Les Paul is currently a middle school with no playground, very limited outdoor space, and facilities which are not set up to accommodate the youngest grades.

During the referendum, a dedicated SPED space was built within Les Paul. The other middle schools do not have an equivalent space, and there has been no mention of any plans to create one, meaning that students whose needs are currently being met in that space would not have the same opportunities in the other schools.

Have the impacts to traffic flow in downtown Waukesha been mapped out? Has this been addressed with the city? Will there be a need for additional police presence or crossing guards to ensure the safety of pedestrians, particularly young children?

Has the district fully planned out which facility upgrades are needed to make sure Les Paul works for children as young as kindergarten (e.g. installing lower toilets and sinks in bathrooms)? We wanted to get the petition circulating as quickly as possible due to the other petition we had shared (which was not authored by us) being taken down.

If schools don't have enough staff to accommodate the increased population and needs of the students, it will impact ALL STUDENTS in their learning, the behavior, and mental development.
