The Waukesha School District terminated a teacher yesterday because the Board and Superintendent brought negative attention to the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The administration blamed Ms.Tempel for bringing negative attention to the School District of Waukesha (SDW) when she questioned the administration\u2019s decision not to allow a first grade class to sing the song \u201cRainbowland\u201d. Ms. Tempel, and the public, had good reason to question the administration\u2019s decision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Around a year after his arrival as Superintendent, Dr. Sebert published a letter banning \u201ccontroversial\u201d signs in the classroom. While that initial directive did not mention rainbows or Pride flags, soon safe space signs – a DPI-recognized anti-bullying resource – were removed from classrooms, along with rainbows. In statements to the press, Dr. Sebert denied that his directive was targeted at rainbows or the LGBTQ+ community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Only a few months after his public denials about the nature of his directive, Dr. Sebert suspended a teacher for failure to remove rainbows from her classroom and ordered custodians to move through the schools removing imagery, which included images with rainbows, from the classroom over the winter break.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In February 2023, Dr. Sebert, in a rare moment of transparency, let the truth slip out to parents at a parent advisory council meeting. At that meeting, the Superintendent indicated to parents when asked who determines what is political and controversial with respect to signage that \u201c<\/strong><\/span>a lot of it really comes down to the rainbow type stuff, and making sure that isn\u2019t in the classrooms.\u201d<\/strong> The Board has never had this public debate or vote. Yet, the Superintendent stated that this was the Board\u2019s intent. As a community, we should be concerned that the Superintendent\u2019s statement does not comport with the transparent policy setting we should expect of our elected school board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Parents and the community are not getting transparency in education from our Board or from our superintendent. Transparency comes from the protection of the First Amendment for public employees like Ms. Tempel. Dr. Sebert\u2019s own statements to the parent advisory council, and his past actions, demonstrate that Ms. Tempel, and the community, have good reason to question his motives and to speak publicly about his decisions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We thank Ms. Tempel for providing the transparency that our administration will not provide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Declaraci\u00f3n de la Alianza sobre la audiencia de la Sra. Tempel<\/b><\/p>

El Distrito Escolar de Waukesha despidi\u00f3 a un maestro ayer porque la Junta y el Superintendente llamaron la atenci\u00f3n negativa a la comunidad.<\/span><\/p>

Tempel por llamar la atenci\u00f3n negativa sobre el Distrito Escolar de Waukesha (SDW) cuando cuestion\u00f3 la decisi\u00f3n de la administraci\u00f3n de no permitir que una clase de primer grado cantara la canci\u00f3n Rainbowland. Tempel, y el p\u00fablico, ten\u00edan buenas razones para cuestionar la decisi\u00f3n de la administraci\u00f3n.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Casi a su llegada, el superintendente Sebert public\u00f3 una carta prohibiendo los letreros “controvertidos” en el aula. Si bien esa directiva inicial no mencionaba el arco iris o Las Banderas del Pride, pronto se eliminaron de las aulas los letreros de espacio seguro, un recurso contra el acoso reconocido por el DPI, junto con los arco\u00edris. En declaraciones a la prensa, el Dr. Sebert neg\u00f3 que su directiva estuviera dirigida a los arco\u00edris o a la comunidad LGBTQ +.<\/span><\/p>

Solo unos meses despu\u00e9s de sus negaciones p\u00fablicas sobre la naturaleza de su directiva, el Dr. Sebert suspendi\u00f3 a una maestra por no haber eliminado los arco\u00edris de su aula y orden\u00f3 a los custodios que se movieran a trav\u00e9s de las escuelas eliminando im\u00e1genes, que inclu\u00edan im\u00e1genes con arco iris, del aula durante las vacaciones de invierno.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

En febrero de 2023, el Dr. Sebert, en un raro momento de transparencia, dej\u00f3 que la verdad se les escapara a los padres en una reuni\u00f3n del consejo asesor de padres. Ms. Tempel, and the public, had good reason to question the administration\u2019s decision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> <p>Around a year after his arrival as Superintendent, Dr. Sebert published a letter banning \u201ccontroversial\u201d signs in the classroom. While that initial directive did not mention rainbows or Pride flags, soon safe space signs - a DPI-recognized anti-bullying resource - were removed from classrooms, along with rainbows. In statements to the press, Dr. Sebert denied that his directive was targeted at rainbows or the LGBTQ+ community.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Only a few months after his public denials about the nature of his directive, Dr. Sebert suspended a teacher for failure to remove rainbows from her classroom and ordered custodians to move through the schools removing imagery, which included images with rainbows, from the classroom over the winter break.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> <p>In February 2023, Dr. Sebert, in a rare moment of transparency, let the truth slip out to parents at a parent advisory council meeting. At that meeting, the Superintendent indicated to parents when asked who determines what is political and controversial with respect to signage that <strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>a lot of it really comes down to the rainbow type stuff, and making sure that isn\u2019t in the classrooms.\u201d<\/strong> The Board has never had this public debate or vote. Yet, the Superintendent stated that this was the Board\u2019s intent. As a community, we should be concerned that the Superintendent\u2019s statement does not comport with the transparent policy setting we should expect of our elected school board.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Parents and the community are not getting transparency in education from our Board or from our superintendent. Transparency comes from the protection of the First Amendment for public employees like Ms. Tempel. Dr. Sebert\u2019s own statements to the parent advisory council, and his past actions, demonstrate that Ms. Tempel, and the community, have good reason to question his motives and to speak publicly about his decisions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> <p>We thank Ms. Tempel for providing the transparency that our administration will not provide.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<a name=\"espanol\"><\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Declaraci\u00f3n de la Alianza sobre la audiencia de la Sra.
