The Alliance recognizes that teachers are critical partners in our kids’ education. Thank you for being there each day to support our children’s learning and development. We know you care, and we are grateful for that!

This Teacher Appreciation Week, there is one partner missing from our first-grade classroom at Heyer: Maestra Melissa. Her class is missing out on her energy, her kindness and her many gifts and talents. Maestra Melissa’s first grade class has been without her, or a permanent teacher, for 25 school days and counting. There has been almost no communication or conversation from anyone in the district about her absence or her return.

"Maestra

While we hear from the Superintendent and the Board that they care about academic achievement above all else, they clearly are in no hurry to decide about when and how to return a passionate teacher and exceptional educator to the classroom.

So why does this matter? Research shows that first grade is a critical time in a child’s cognitive development, particularly for building academic skills in reading and language. It is also the time in a child’s learning where their experience predicts how they will feel about schooling. A lengthy absence of a teacher, without purpose, creates burdens on fellow teachers and has an exceptional impact on students with disabilities or histories of trauma where consistency of teaching and trusted relationships are critical for success. Keeping Maestra Melissa out of the classroom, rather than being accountable and transparent about their decisions, is hurting students most.

For today’s Teacher Appreciation Week action, the Alliance encourages all district parents, especially those with students in Maestra Melissa’s class, to email Jim Sebert and the Board and ask, “When are they going to put kids first? And how do they justify this delay?”

Because the website emails are not consistently working, you can reach Dr. Sebert at:

And how do they justify this delay?”

Because the website emails are not consistently working, you can reach Dr. Sebert at:

jsebert@waukesha.k12.wi.us

Please also copy all Board Members:

mborowski@waukesha.k12.wi.us
ekoenig@waukesha.k12.wi.us
kkozlowski@waukesha.k12.wi.us
pmccaffe@waukesha.k12.wi.us
mmoorer@waukesha.k12.wi.us
klpiacsek@waukesha.k12.wi.us
dvoit@waukesha.k12.wi.us
dwadd@waukesha.k12.wi.us
azenobia@waukesha.k12.wi.us

#TeacherAppreciationWeek2023

-------

jsebert@waukesha.k12.wi.us

mborowski@waukesha.k12.wi.us
ekoenig@waukesha.k12.wi.us
kkozlowski@waukesha.k12.wi.us
pmccaffe@waukesha.k12.wi.us
mmoorer@waukesha.k12.wi.us
klpiacsek@waukesha.k12.wi.us
dvoit@waukesha.k12.wi.us
dwadd@waukesha.k12.wi.us
azenobia@waukesha.k12.wi.us

#TeacherAppreciationWeek2023

["GET
